Why Use Cloth?
The choice to use cloth diapers is a very personal choice. Only you can decide if using cloth is the right choice for you and your family. Our goal is to make sure that people realize that they have a viable alternative to using disposable diapers.
Health Reasons- Disposable diapers are very absorbant, but the reason that they are so absorbant is due to being full of chemicals. Sodium Polyacrylate is just one of these chemicals, it absorbs mositure and forms a gel. I can remember wiping this gel of my oldest daughter during diaper changes and never realizing the potential danger that it posed. Sodium Polyacrylate (SAP) was banned from the use of tampons due to links toxic shock syndrome, but is still used in disposable diapers today.
Traces of Dioxin ( a chemical used in the paper bleaching process ) have been found in trace amounts in disposable diapers. Dioxin is listed as the most toxic of all cancer-linked chemicals by the EPA. Dioxin is banned in many countries, but not here in the US.
Environment- Did you realize that over 27 billion disposable diapers are consumed in one year in the United States alone? And, over 90% of those diapers end up in land fills? This poses a threat to our ground water and is wasteful of our natural resources. It take 300lbs of wood to cloth diaper one child for one year.
Cost- You can literally save thousands of dollars by choosing to use cloth.
For our family, considering these factors, it just didn't make sense not to use cloth. We were making a healthier choice for our daughter, a better choice for the environment, and a smarter choice for our budget.
