Types Of Cloth Diapers
Prefolds (DSQ or CPF)- Rectangle shaped fabric sectioned into thirds and most commonly made of cotton or hemp. These diapers require folding and the use of a diaper cover to make them waterproof. Often they are referred to as DSQ- Diaper Service Quality or CPF- Chinese Prefold. These are the most economical diapering choice available.
Fitted Diapers- Like prefolds these diapers will require the use of a diaper cover to make them waterproof, however, they do not require folding as they are shaped to fit around your baby. These are available in a wide range of fabric choices and are easier to put on and take off than prefolds.
Pocket Diapers- These diapers do not require the use of a cover, and have a pocket at the back to place a fabric insert. Commonly the inserts are microterry or hemp, but you can use a prefold as an insert in pocket diapers. These diapers usually have a lining of micro fleece that wicks moisture away from baby and into the insert that has been placed in the pocket. These diapers are more expensive than prefolds or fitted, but are quicker to put on and off and come in a variety of colors and prints.
All-In-One Diapers- Are the closest to disposables as they are a one piece system. Covers are not required and there is not pocket for an insert. This diaper is the fastes method of cloth diapering.
Diaper Covers- Are required to make prefolds and fitted diapers waterproof. Diaper covers are available in a variety of fabrics. Polyurethane laminate is very popular as is it very affordable and doesn't leak. Other options include fleece and wool. Both wool and fleece are very breathable and keep baby's bottom cool and dry. Wool absorbs urine and is dry to the touch. Wool also as the extra benefit of being naturally anitbacterial.
